Strong Second Half Fuels Victory

Toreros earn 71-58 victory against Loyola Marymount

SAN DIEGO – Tyler Williams scored 14 points to lead San Diego to a 71-58 victory against Loyola Marymount on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Williams was one of four Toreros (14-7, 3-3 WCC) players to reach double-digits in scoring. Isaiah Pineiro added 13 points, while Joey Calcaterra and Yauhen Massalski chipped in 12 apiece.

Williams did most of his damage from long-range, going 4-of-8 from behind the arc and contributing over half of the Toreros 3-pointers in the game.

The balanced offensive effort featured 17 assists on 23 made baskets. Isaiah Wright led the way with six assists, followed by Calcaterra with five and Williams with four.

The Toreros hosted their annual Seats for Solders night and had over 400 current military members in attendance that came to life in the second half of the game and led chants on every possession.

USD fed off the increased energy and was particularly impressive in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the field and outscoring the Lions, 40-28, to secure the victory.

LMU (14-6, 2-4 WCC) shot 52 percent from the field on the night but struggled from deep, connecting on just 1-of-9 from 3-point range. James Batemon led LMU with 17 points.

USD was strong on the glass with five players registering at least five rebounds apiece. Williams pulled down a team-high six.

The Toreros remain at home this weekend when they play host to San Francisco on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.
