Career Night to Top Waves

Four Toreros recorded career-best nights to give Toreros 3-2 win over Pepperdine

SAN DIEGO—Career nights for four Toreros powered San Diego to a 3-2 victory over Pepperdine on Tuesday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

In a tightly contested match that saw 25 ties and 10 lead changes, the Toreros (10-4, 3-0 WCC) came out on top, defeating the Waves (6-8, 2-1 WCC) 21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-27, 15-13 to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Thana Fayad recorded her fourth double-double of the season to pace the Toreros offensively and defensively. The reigning WCC player of the week, collected career-highs in kills (20), digs (19), points (24.0) and tied her career-best with three aces in the match, adding two blocks and hitting .259 on the night.

Anna Newsome also finished with a double-double—her fifth of the year—collecting a career-high 58 assists and adding 15 digs, three kills and two blocks.

Libero Annie Benbow registered a career-best 19 digs, tying Fayad for the team-high and added one ace on the night.

San Diego registered 10.0 team blocks, led by Lauren Turner, Grace Frohling and Megan Jacobsen at the net. Turner set a new career-high with six blocks, while Frohling and Jacobsen added four and three respectively.

Katie Lukes and Jacobsen also turned in strong performances for USD offensively. Lukes hit .173 and collected 16 kills, while Jacobsen registered 13 kills at a .333 clip.

After USD jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Waves answered with a six-point run that included four consecutive blocks to take the lead and never looked back. Fayad collected five kills and Turner and Jacobsen added three, but hitting errors hurt the Toreros early, and they finished the first set at a .043 clip.

San Diego answered quickly in the second frame, starting off with back-to-back kills from Fayad. The senior hit .556 adding five more kills and the Toreros cruised to a 25-19 second-set victory to even the match 1-1.

The teams traded the lead early in the third set, knotting up at 8-all. Lukes put down a kill, followed by a solo block to give USD a bit of breathing room. The Toreros slowly began to create distance, leading by as many as six at 17-11, before the Waves put together run to pull even again, 20-20.

The teams continued to trade points down the stretch before a block by Fayad and Turner and a kill by Fayad, gave USD the set, 26-24.

The fourth set saw 13 ties and five lead changes, with neither team leading by more than two points. At 22-all, the Toreros got back-to-back kills by Jacobsen and Fayad to reach match point. However, Pepperdine would not go quietly, finishing on a 5-1 run to win 27-25 and force a deciding fifth set.

The Toreros jumped out to a four-point lead in the fifth, before the Waves rallied to even the set at 13-13. A kill by Lukes followed by a block by Frohling and Turner sealed the victory for USD, 15-13.

Pepperdine held the blocking advantage 17-10, while the Toreros held the slight hitting advantage .199 compared to .181. The teams were even at 84 digs apiece while USD held the slight advantage at the service line, with six aces compared to Pepperdine's five.

Next up, the Toreros will travel north to take on Saint Mary's (Oct. 3, 7 p.m. PT) and Pacific (Oct. 5, 12 p.m. PT) this weekend.
