FAIRFAX, Calif. – Sophomore
Harrison Kingsley carded a 15-under to finish tied for second at the 2019 Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club, turning in the best individual performance by a Torero in more than two years.
Kingsley, now with back-to-back top-four finishes, shot a six-under 65 in the final round on Tuesday to finish one stroke back of medalist Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine. Despite the narrow gap, Kingsley had the best finish by a Torero since March 2018 when
Dalton Hankamer tied for medalist honors at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate tournament. The sophomore had seven birdies on Tuesday to best his 66 and 67 in the first two rounds on Monday.
"Great event for Harrison finishing tied for second," said USD head coach
Chris Riley. "He drove the golf ball very well and putted great. He had a chance to tie it on the final hole today with a putt from 15 feet, and the ball burned the edge of the cup."
As a team, the Toreros registered a one-over 285 on the final day of the two-day tournament to finish 10th in the team standings – their highest finish ever in the MacKenzie Invitational. They were four strokes back of the next team, Chattanooga, for ninth.
Freshman
Alrik Pan was the next highest finisher for the Toreros as he placed tied for 51st with a two over 215. Junior
Donald Kay (three-over 216) and sophomore
Evan Kawai (four-over 217) were the other two Toreros to contribute to the final team score.
Freshman
Joshua Hu was one stroke back of Kawai with a five-over 218.
The Toreros continue their stretch of three tournaments in three weeks with the Bill Cullum Invitational on October 14-15 at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif. The tournament is hosted by Cal State Northridge.
