Toreros Battle for First at Home

No. 24 San Diego will play host to No. 10 BYU on Friday night

 SAN DIEGO—No. 24 San Diego will play host to No. 10 BYU on Friday night with the WCC's top spot on the line.
 
The Toreros (20-5, 13-1 WCC) will take on the WCC co-leading Cougars (22-3, 13-1 WCC) in their final meeting of the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The match will be streamed via the WCC Network and live statistics will be available on USDToreros.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• The Toreros swept both San Francisco (25-23, 25-18, 25-14) and Santa Clara (25-17, 25-21, 27-25) in week eleven and are currently tied for first place in the WCC with BYU.
 
• Thana Fayad led USD, averaging 4.17 kills per set and 3.33 digs per set. The senior outside hit .230, finishing with 25 kills and two aces for a team-high 27 points. Fayad registered her eighth double-double of the season (13 kills, 12 digs) against San Francisco.
 
• Katie Lukes was second on the team with 22 kills (3.67 k/s), reaching double-digit kills in both matches and hitting at a .341 clip. Megan Jacobsen averaged 2.67 kills per set, hitting .368 and finishing with 16 kills.
 
• Anna Newsome directed the offense to a .249 hitting percentage, averaging 12.17 assists per set. Newsome also led the team with four aces.
 
• Annie Benbow turned in another strong performance in the back court for USD, finishing the week with 30 digs (6.00 d/s). In Saturday's win over SCU, Benbow collected 20 digs—two shy of her career high (22 vs BYU, Oct. 18).
 
• It was a relatively quiet week for the Torero block that collected two team blocks against San Francisco and five against Santa Clara. USD was led defensively at the net by Lauren Turner who collected four blocks (one solo) while Jacobsen, Newsome, and Grace Frohling all added three block assists.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST BYU
• The Cougars hold the slight advantage in the all-time series with the Toreros, 10-9. USD won the earlier meeting this season in Provo, 3-2. It marked the first conference loss at Smith Fieldhouse for BYU since Oct. 27, 2017 (USD, 3-1).
 
• Four Toreros reached double-digit kills, led by Fayad with 19 kills.  Fayad added two aces and three blocks to collect a match-high 21.5 points. Newsome registered a double-double (49 assists, 13 digs) and Benbow collected a career high 22 digs.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
• San Diego jumped back in to the AVCA Division I Coaches Poll this week at No. 24. San Diego's highest ranking this season was 21st in the preseason poll and has appeared in the top-25 three times this season.
 
• The Toreros sit at No. 31 in the NCAA RPI rankings, having faced two opponents in the top-10 and six opponents in the top-30.
 
OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY
• The Toreros are currently hitting .282 as a team on the season to rank 10th in the nation and first in the WCC. USD is collecting 14.04 kills per set to rank 22nd nationally and first in the conference.
 
• USD also ranks first in the WCC for assists per set (12.99) and 24th nationally.
 
• Megan Jacobsen ranks first in the WCC and 22nd nationally with a .399 hitting percentage.
