Defensive Effort Leads San Diego Over Air Force

Six blocks and double-digit steals lead to 70-59 win

USAFA, Colo. -- San Diego (2-0) held Air Force (1-3) to just 34.9% shooting from the field on the way to a 70-59 victory against the Falcons on the road on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Toreros disrupted the Falcon's shot in the contest, coming away with six blocks on the afternoon. Myah Pace's three rejections led the way individually for the Toreros. San Diego also recorded 11 steals on the afternoon turning multiple takeaways into scoring opportunities.
 
Four players reached double figures, led by Leticia Soares, who had 16 points and eight rebounds. Madison Pollock added 13 points, and Pace helped out with 12 points and two steals.
 
Senior Patricia Brossmann pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead San Diego's offense that racked up second chance opportunities, grabbing 15 total boards and turning them into 15 second chance points.
 
San Diego started off strong, putting together a 16-12 lead heading into the second quarter. USD was strong in the paint during the first, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.
 
The Toreros built the momentum into a 25-19 lead, before going on a 13-0 run with three minutes left in the second quarter. The run would go on to be San Diego's longest scoring run of the contest. Pollock capitalized off a jumper to build the lead to 38-19. The Falcons cut into that lead, but USD held steady with a 38-23 advantage heading into halftime.
 
San Diego continued to dominate in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.
 
After the half, the Toreros added to their advantage and owned a 58-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter. San Diego continued to score well near the basket, outscoring the Falcons 42-32 in the paint.
 
USD then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. San Diego got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 12 total points.
 
The Toreros are back in action on Tuesday, when they'll take on Biola at home in the Jenny Craig Pavilion at 6 p.m.
