Berry Named WCC Co-Player of the Year

Six Toreros earned All-WCC honors

SAN DIEGO – After leading the conference and nation in goals and points, San Diego's Miguel Berry was named 2019 WCC Co-Player of the Year as he was one of six Toreros who combined for seven All-WCC honors, the conference office announced.

Berry, the 10th different Torero to earn conference player of the year but first since 2015, scored 17 goals and tallied 42 points in one of the most productive offensive seasons in program history. The Poway, Calif. product scored the second-most goals in a season and most by a Torero since 2000. His points, meanwhile, were also the most in program history in 19 years and tied for the fourth-most ever. He registered seven of his 17 goals and 16 of his 42 points in seven WCC games.

Berry was also named All-WCC First Team, making him the seventh Torero to earn that honor three or more times in a career.

Senior Henry Lander and junior Ross Meldrum were selected to the All-WCC Second Team. For Lander, who started all 18 games and centered the USD backline, it was the third time in his career he earned second team honors from the conference. The award for Meldrum, who scored two goals and had four assists in 18 games, was the first of his career.

Aaron Frey and Freddy Polzer were named All-WCC Honorable Mention for the second time in their careers. The junior and senior, respectively, last earned the honors in 2017.

Benji Sorman, a defender from Jonkoping, Sweden, was named to the All-WCC Freshman Team after he played in 11 games (six starts). This is the fourth straight year a Torero was named to the conference's all-freshman team, following Matt Wiher in 2018, Frey in 2017, and Berry in 2016.

USD completed its season with a 12-5-1 record (3-4 WCC). The dozen victories were its most in a season in 2012. The group graduates three seniors: Berry, Lander and Polzer.
