Efficient Offense Secures Sweep

No. 20 San Diego earns season sweep of Gonzaga

SAN DIEGO—No. 20 San Diego secured a, 25-16, 25-17, 25-10, victory over Gonzaga on Thursday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The Toreros (22-5, 15-1 WCC) hit .519 as a team in the final set to earn the season sweep over the Bulldogs (10-18, 4-12 WCC) with two players reaching double-digit kills.
 
Thana Fayad led USD with a match-high 12 kills, hitting .429 on the night. Megan Jacobsen also reached double-digits, collecting 11 kills on 17 errorless swings to finish at a .647 clip. Katie Lukes and Grace Frohling also chipped in six and five kills respectively.
 
Anna Newsome directed the offense to a .319 hitting percentage in the match, collecting 26 assists while Laura Madill added eight.
 
Roxie Wiblin continued to be a force at the service line, collecting three aces—all in the third set. Frohling and Camryn Tastad also added an ace each for the Toreros.
 
The Torero defense limited Gonzaga to a .092 hitting percentage on the night. Annie Benbow collected a match-high 16 digs, while Newsome and Wiblin added six apiece. Lauren Turner collected two blocks including one solo stop.
 
After trailing 5-2 to start the match, the Toreros went on an 8-2 run to take control of the first set. Fayad and Jacobsen put the pressure on the Bulldogs early, with Fayad collecting five of her 12 kills in the set and Jacobsen adding four.
 
After trading points early, USD put together another 8-1 run to lead the Bulldogs, 12-5. It was Lukes who took control in the second set, collecting five kills down the stretch. The Toreros added two of their three team blocks to take the set and a 2-0 match lead.
 
It was all San Diego in the final frame. USD jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind three aces from Wiblin and never looked back. The Toreros hit .519 as a team and collected 16 kills, including six from Fayad, to close out the match in straight sets.
 
The Toreros return to the JCP on Saturday to take on Portland at 12 p.m. PT with a chance to clinch a share of the WCC title. Prior to the match, USD will celebrate its four seniors, Megan Jacobsen, Payton Douglass, Megan Priest and Anna Newsome.
