Toreros Take Thanksgiving Tournament Opener

San Diego secures 57-49 win against Monmouth

SAN DIEGO -- The Toreros (4-1) fought back from a halftime deficit to beat Monmouth (0-4) 57-49 to open up the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Three players reached double figures for San Diego, led by Patricia Brossmann, who had 11 points. Sydney Hunter tacked on 10 points and two steals, and Madison Pollock chipped in as well with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. This marks Pollock's first double-double of the season.

The Toreros shared the ball well in Friday's game, racking up 17 assists on 20 made field goals. Junior guard Myah Pace totaled six assists to lead San Diego.

San Diego's defense created issues for Monmouth on the offensive end of the floor, holding the Hawks to a 33.3 field goal percentage. The Toreros kept them off the offensive board giving away only four offensive rebounds and four second chance points as San Diego cleared 26 defensive rebounds on the afternoon.

USD started off strong, putting together a 16-12 lead heading into the second quarter. The Toreros were able to do most of their damage in the paint, scoring 10 of their 16 points close to the basket.

The Toreros couldn't maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-29. Brossmann led the way in the first half, shooting three of four from the field.

Jordyn Edwards remained perfect from the line hitting both opportunities in the half. The redshirt junior is now 14-14 for free throws on the year.

San Diego rallied in the third and had constructed a 44-40 lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Hunter, to expand its lead further to 53-40 with one and a half minutes to go in the period. The Hawks attempted to cut the lead at the end of the third, but the Toreros entered the fourth with a 53-43 edge.

Hunter came up big on defense for the Toreros with a block off a fast break drive by Monmouth. Pollock continued to be potent from the field as USD held on for the victory in the fourth quarter.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, when they'll take on the winner of Texas Tech and Purdue Fort Wayne at 4:30 p.m. (PT) for the championship game of the Thanksgiving Tournament.
