Pace, Pollock Lead as Toreros Fall to Texas Tech

San Diego's late surge comes up short in 64-60 loss

SAN DIEGO - San Diego's late surge in the fourth quarter came up short as the Toreros (4-2) fell 64-60 to Texas Tech (5-0) on Friday afternoon. With the loss, USD places second in the San Diego Thanksgiving Tournament.
 
Junior guard Myah Pace led the Toreros with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. With this afternoon's performance, Pace tacked on new season-highs in rebounds and assists. She now leads the team with 27 assists and 23 steals on the year.
 
Madison Pollock recorded her second consecutive double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The senior leads San Diego in three different categories: total points, points per game, and defensive rebounds per game. Jordyn Edwards and Leticia Soares also came through on offense with seven and eight points respectively.
 
Led by Pollock's five offensive rebounds, San Diego crashed the offensive glass well, outscoring Texas Tech 16-11 in second chance points for the contest.
 
San Diego's defense worked to create havoc for the Red Raiders, as the Toreros forced 20 turnovers to create 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Pace's five steals led the way individually for USD.
 
The Toreros kept pace with the Red Raiders in the first quarter as Sydney Hunter laid one in to bring USD within two off an assist by Edwards with two minutes in the period. A layup from Aminata Dosso with three minutes to go gave San Diego its sole lead of the contest, 16-13.
 
San Diego continued to battle, but entered the second frame down by one, 17-16.
 
The Toreros were unable to shift the momentum and continued to lose ground in the second quarter creating a 36-28 halftime deficit.
 
After halftime, Pace and Edwards worked to shift the momentum as Pace came up big on defense with a steal near half court. Edwards was there for the breakaway to bring the Toreros within three, 44-41. San Diego played well near the basket in the third, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
 
Texas Tech widened its lead into the fourth, constructing a 57-45 advantage before San Diego went on a 7-0 run, finished off by a jumper from Pollock, to shrink the deficit to 57-52 with five and a half minutes to go in the contest. San Diego looked to continue its comeback as Pollock brought the Toreros with three, nailing a baseline jumper for an and one in the paint with 51 seconds remaining in the fourth.
 
The Red Raiders were able to hold on in the final seconds to secure the 64-60 victory.
 
The Toreros are back in action on Wednesday night, when they'll take on WNIT qualifier Idaho at 6 p.m. (PT).
