Toreros Drop Pair of Games

San Diego falls to Central Michigan and No. 4 Florida

TEMPE, Ariz. – A pair of late comeback efforts fell short as San Diego lost two games on the second day of play at the Littlewood Classic at Arizona State.

The Toreros (2-7) opened the day with a 10-8 loss against Central Michigan and fell 12-4 in five innings against No. 4 Florida.

USD fell behind early against the Chippewas and could not quite complete a seventh-inning comeback. CMU scored six runs in the top of the second and added a pair in the top of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead.

The Chippewas added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, which ended up being the game-winning runs. Shelbi Evans hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to cut USD's deficit to 10-8 but the Toreros could not keep the rally going to complete the comeback.

Taylor Spence and Sara Silveyra led USD's offense with two hits apiece, while five other Toreros players recorded a hit each.

Delaney Heller (1-3) got the start in the circle but lasted just 1 2/3 innings before Halle Kyler entered in relief. Kyler completed the final 5 1/3 innings, permitting four runs on 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

USD could not slow down Florida's offense in its second game of the day. The Gators (9-0) scored in all five innings, racking up 15 hits along the way.

Silveyra led the Toreros offensively with a 2-for-2 day. Lindsay Clare contributed two of the Toreros four RBIs on the day.

USD scored three of its four runs in the bottom of the fifth but could not secure enough runs to avoid the eight-run rule.

Madison Earnshaw (1-5) got the start in the circle and pitched all 5.0 innings.

The Toreros conclude weekend play with a pair of games on Sunday against Illinois State and No. 14/7 Arizona State.
