Strong Down the Stretch

San Diego defeats Portland, 63-52

SAN DIEGO – Isaiah Pineiro registered his 12th double-double of the year and scored a game-high 22 points to lead San Diego to a 63-52 victory against Portland on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The Toreros (17-11, 6-7 WCC) closed the game on a 9-0 scoring run to snap a three-game losing streak. USD permitted just one Pilots (7-21, 0-13 WCC) field goal and six total points in the final 11:20 of the game.
 
Along with his 22 points, Pineiro tied his career high of 16 rebounds. It is his sixth double-double in the past seven games. Pineiro scored at least 20 points for the third straight game and 14th time this season.
 
Olin Carter III scored 16 points and moved into fifth place in USD history in career points with 1,468.
 
The Toreros did significant damage from 3-point range, knocking down seven triples in the first half and finishing with 11 on the night.

USD led 35-30 at halftime and tightened up defensively in the second half. The Toreros held Portland to 25 percent shooting from the field and 22 percent from behind the arc in the second period.
 
Tahirou Diabate led the Pilots with 12 points, doing most of his work at the free throw line on 6-of-8 shooting.
 
Finn Sullivan contributed quality minutes off the bench for USD and tied his season high of 11 points.
 
Isaiah Wright led the Toreros with seven assists – one shy of his season high.
 
The Toreros will look to continue their momentum on Saturday in their final regular season home game of the year against Saint Mary's at 6 p.m. PT. USD will honor its senior class during a pregame ceremony beginning at 5:45 p.m.
