SAN DIEGO – San Diego completed a three-game sweep of Southern Utah with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex.
Â
The Toreros (5-9) dominated in all areas of the game against the Thuderbirds (1-7), outscoring SUU 23-5 on the weekend.
Â
Lindsay Clare and
Taylor Spence paced the Toreros offensively over the three games, both batting .625 (5-for-8) with three runs and an RBI apiece.
Â
Sara Silveyra and
Sophia Bjerk both went 4-for-7 (.571). Silveyra led USD with three doubles and scored three runs. Bjerk led USD with five RBIs and registered a double and a triple.
Â
Kelli Kufta hit .556 (5-for-9) with two doubles, a triple, two run and four RBIs on the weekend.
Â
Delaney Heller (3-4) pitched well in two victories and posted a 0.70 ERA in 10.0 innings. She racked up 13 strikeouts and permitted just eight hits and three walks.
Â
The Toreros fell behind early in the series finale on Sunday. SUU's Madison Carr stole home on a failed suicide squeeze attempt to put the Thunderbirds up, 1-0. With runners on first and third, SUU capitalized on a throwing error to second on a steal attempt to bring in the runner from third and double their lead to 2-0.
Â
That was all the Thunderbirds would get and the USD offense took over.
Â
The Toreros rallied for four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead. The Toreros loaded the bases with one out and
Lauren Kane drew a walk to bring in a run.
Â
Kufta sliced a two-RBI single down the right field line to bring in two more runs. Bjerk singled to third base in the next at bat to bring the fourth run home.
Â
Halle Kyler got the start in the circle and went 2.0 innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits and no walks with one strikeout.
Â
Heller finished the final 5.0 innings and did not allow an SUU run, permitting just five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Â
The Toreros extended their lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Spence led off with a single and came home on a double to left-center field by Silveyra.
Â
Shelbi Evans contributed an RBI-single before Bjerk sent an RBI-double to left field to put USD up, 7-2.
Â
USD will remain at home next week as it co-hosts the San Diego Classic with San Diego State. The Toreros will take on Weber State, Florida Gulf Coast, UC Davis, UIC and San Jose State.
