Toreros Complete Series Sweep

San Diego wins series finale, 7-2

SAN DIEGO – San Diego completed a three-game sweep of Southern Utah with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex.

The Toreros (5-9) dominated in all areas of the game against the Thuderbirds (1-7), outscoring SUU 23-5 on the weekend.

Lindsay Clare and Taylor Spence paced the Toreros offensively over the three games, both batting .625 (5-for-8) with three runs and an RBI apiece.

Sara Silveyra and Sophia Bjerk both went 4-for-7 (.571). Silveyra led USD with three doubles and scored three runs. Bjerk led USD with five RBIs and registered a double and a triple.

Kelli Kufta hit .556 (5-for-9) with two doubles, a triple, two run and four RBIs on the weekend.

Delaney Heller (3-4) pitched well in two victories and posted a 0.70 ERA in 10.0 innings. She racked up 13 strikeouts and permitted just eight hits and three walks.

The Toreros fell behind early in the series finale on Sunday. SUU's Madison Carr stole home on a failed suicide squeeze attempt to put the Thunderbirds up, 1-0. With runners on first and third, SUU capitalized on a throwing error to second on a steal attempt to bring in the runner from third and double their lead to 2-0.

That was all the Thunderbirds would get and the USD offense took over.

The Toreros rallied for four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead. The Toreros loaded the bases with one out and Lauren Kane drew a walk to bring in a run.

Kufta sliced a two-RBI single down the right field line to bring in two more runs. Bjerk singled to third base in the next at bat to bring the fourth run home.

Halle Kyler got the start in the circle and went 2.0 innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Heller finished the final 5.0 innings and did not allow an SUU run, permitting just five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

The Toreros extended their lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Spence led off with a single and came home on a double to left-center field by Silveyra.

Shelbi Evans contributed an RBI-single before Bjerk sent an RBI-double to left field to put USD up, 7-2.

USD will remain at home next week as it co-hosts the San Diego Classic with San Diego State. The Toreros will take on Weber State, Florida Gulf Coast, UC Davis, UIC and San Jose State.
