RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A comeback effort came up short as San Diego dropped a 3-2 decision against UC Riverside in the final game of the Highlander Classic at Amy S. Harrison Field.
 
The Toreros (9-14) gave up three runs in the bottom of the third inning. USD responded with two runs of its own in the top of fourth but that was all the Toreros would get. It is USD's third straight game decided by one run.
 
Sara Silveyra homered and Sophia Bjerk provided an RBI for the Toreros. Lindsay Clare led USD at the plate with a 2-for-3 day.
 
Halle Kyler got the start in the circle and lasted 4.0 innings, permitting three runs on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
 
Delaney Heller entered as relief and kept UCR off the board during the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and racking up three strikeouts.
 
USD begins a six-game homestand next weekend when it plays host to Cal State Bakersfield for three games.
