Clutch Hitting, Great Pitching in Walkoff Wins

San Diego earns pair of 3-2 victories against Cal State Bakersfield

SAN DIEGO – Sara Silveyra hit walkoff RBI-singles in two games Saturday to lead San Diego to a pair of 3-2 victories against Cal State Bakersfield at the USD Softball Complex.

Silveyra had a big day overall, going 4-for-8 (.500) with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

The Toreros (11-14) rallied back from a 2-1 deficit in the first game, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out. An RBI-single by Shelbi Evans leveled the score at, 2-2, before Silveyra delivered the deciding hit – a line drive to the right-center field gap – in the following at bat.

USD and the Roadrunners (7-12) were tied 2-2 after the first inning of the second game and the score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Spence led off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Evans.

Silveyra brought Spence home with a single to right field to secure the Toreros second 3-2 walkoff victory.

The Toreros benefitted from strong pitching in both games. Delaney Heller (6-4) got the start in the first game and threw her team-high fifth complete game. She permitted two runs – one earned – on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Earnshaw (4-6) pitched the final five innings of the second game and held the Roadrunners scoreless, allowing just one hit and no walks with six strikeouts.

Along with Silveyra's clutch performance at the plate, Sophia Bjerk had a nice day offensively with a 3-for-4 showing with two walks. Lindsay Clare and Kelli Kufta both went 2-for-5 (.400). Clare, Evans and Casiano contributed RBIs.

The Toreros will look to maintain their momentum on Sunday when they conclude their series against CSUB at noon PT.
