SAN DIEGO—San Diego scored nine runs on 11 hits in a 9-3 victory over St. John's on Friday night at Fowler Park.
After trailing 3-2 through five innings, the Toreros (7-3) scored seven runs down the stretch to defeat the Red Storm (1-5) in the opening game of their weekend series.
Nine different Toreros registered hits in the game, including
Cody Jefferis who finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a walk to lead USD's offense.
Jeff Houghtby came in as pinch hitter in the sixth inning for the Toreros and went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, including driving in the go-ahead run.
Josh Hendrickson (2-0, 2.70 ERA) got the start for USD, going 2.1 innings and giving up three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Three Toreros came out of the bullpen in relief of Hendrickson, including
Noah Owen,
Jack Dolak and
Jake Miller.
Dolak was credited with the win, coming in midway through the fourth and pitching 2.1 innings with no runs, no hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Miller earned a save, closing out the final three innings with one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.
The Toreros scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead but the Red Storm answered in the top of the second with a two-run home run. SJU only other run came in the third with an RBI single to the shortstop.
San Diego added two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and two more in the eighth to secure the victory.
