Toreros Take Wild Game Against Gophers

San Diego defeated Minnesota 6-5 in a walk-off in the eighth inning

SEATTLE—San Diego completed a dramatic walk-off 6-5 victory over Minnesota on Saturday afternoon at T-Mobile Park.

The Toreros (11-4) moved to 2-0 in the Seattle Baseball Showcase after a wild eight-inning battle with the Gophers (2-10).

The pre-determined time limit was reached in the eighth—stating that a new inning may not begin more than 3.5 hours after the first pitch—with the Gophers leading 5-4. It was USD's second shortened game of the weekend.

The Toreros scored two runs in the third to take an early 2-0 lead and added runs in the fourth, fifth. The Gophers tied the game up three different times before taking the lead in the top of the seventh.

Chris Colarossi began the bottom of the eighth inning with a leadoff walk before Stephen Dubb singled to right-center. Adam Kerner laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.

Connor Doyle made a heads-up play after the Gophers catcher threw a dropped-third-strike back to the pitcher. Doyle reached safely on a stealthy run down to first base to save USD an out. With the bases loaded, Cody Jefferis and Shane McGuire both drew walks to force in runs for the victory.

San Diego recorded seven hits, with Doyle leading the charge, hitting 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and the pivotal heads-up play in the eighth. McGuire and Tora Otsuka collected two RBIs apiece.

Chris Murphy got the start for the Toreros, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing two runs on one hit with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Jake Miller (2-1, 0.00 ERA) was credited with the win for USD, closing out the final 1.2 innings and allowing one hit with three strikeouts.

The Toreros close out the Seattle Baseball Showcase on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT against Indiana. LHP Josh Hendrickson will get the start for San Diego on the mound.
