Kane Delivers Third Straight Walk-Off Win

San Diego defeats San Diego State in 10 innings, 5-4

SAN DIEGO – Lauren Kane hit a two-out RBI-single through the right side of the infield to lift San Diego to a 5-4 victory against San Diego State in 10 innings on Wednesday night at the USD Softball Complex.

After four straight scoreless innings, Lindsay Clare singled to right center field to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning. Amanda Valle entered the game as pinch runner and moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Madison Casiano.

Valle moved to third on a wild pitch before Kane delivered the deciding hit to seal the Toreros (19-18) third consecutive walk-off victory.

Madison Earnshaw got the start in the circle for USD and was excellent through the first four innings. She ran into trouble in the fifth when the Aztecs (17-21) put together a rally to produce four runs – three earned – to tie the game, 4-4.

Halle Kyler (4-2) entered the game in relief and was excellent in the final 5 2/3 innings, holding SDSU scoreless on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

It was a team effort offensively for the Toreros with seven players combining for eight hits. Clare led the way with two hits, while Rion Simms went 1-for-4 with a team-high two RBIs.

USD jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Simms hit an RBI-double down the left field line and Shannon McKeon scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

The Toreros doubled their lead in the third, 4-0. Madison Casiano singled to right center field to bring in Savannah Shields from second. A Simms ground out to shortstop with the bases loaded brought in another run.

After a slow start offensively, SDSU broke through in the top of the fifth inning with four runs to level the score, 4-4.

The game remained tied until the 10th inning when Kane delivered the RBI-single to secure the victory for USD.

The Toreros will look to continue their momentum as they resume conference play and begin a six-game road stretch this weekend at Loyola Marymount.
