Offense Stalls at LMU

San Diego drops pair of games against the Lions

LOS ANGELES – San Diego had its four-game winning-streak snapped Saturday, dropping a pair of games at Loyola Marymount.

The Toreros fell 2-0 in the series opener and dropped an 8-0 decision in five innings in the second game.

USD (19-20, 3-2 WCC) had a tough day offensively managing just four hits in the first game and five in the second.

The Toreros left six runners on base in the first game, spoiling a quality outing by Delaney Heller (4-3) in the circle. Heller limited the Lions (26-16, 3-2 WCC) to two runs on eight hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

Taylor Spence led USD offensively with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate. Madison Casiano and Lauren Kane registered a hit apiece. However, the Toreros could not generate the offense needed to get on the scoreboard and left runners stranded in five of the first six innings.

The offense continued to stall in the second game. Spence remained the anomaly at the plate, going 3-for-3. Sara Silveyra and Rion Simms contributed a hit apiece.

Madison Earnshaw (5-9) got the start in the circle but ran into trouble when LMU rallied for four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Halle Kyler and Hannah Boos took over in the circle as relief but could not slow down the Lions offense as LMU added runs in the second and third innings, and a pair of runs in the fourth, to extend their lead to 8-0.

The Toreros put two runners on in the top of the fifth inning but could not get the hit needed to bring them home and extend the game.

USD concludes the series at LMU on Sunday at noon.
