LOS ANGELES – San Diego dropped a heartbreaker in the series finale at Loyola Marymount as the Lions rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 4-3 victory Sunday morning.
Â
The Toreros (19-21, 3-3 WCC) held a lead for nearly the entire game but were undone in the final inning by LMU (27-16, 4-2 WCC). The Lions led off the inning with a solo home run, then scored two runs on a Toreros error to level the score, 3-3.
Â
LMU's Irma Sanchez delivered the final blow to USD with an RBI-single up the middle to score the deciding run.
Â
It was a tough finish to the weekend for the Toreros which struggled to produce runs in the first two games of the series but seemed to break through in the finale.
Â
Kelli Kufta gave the Toreros their first lead of the weekend with a two-out solo homer in the second inning.
Â
USD added to its lead in the third inning on an RBI-double by
Sophia Bjerk and an RBI single by
Lindsay Clare.
Â
The Toreros held its 3-0 lead through the top of the seventh inning and had chances to extend their advantage but left eight runners stranded in the game.
Â
The result spoiled another strong outing by
Delaney Heller in the circle. Heller held LMU to three runs – one earned – on 10 hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Madison Earnshaw (5-9) entered the game in relief but could not halt the Lions seventh-inning rally.
Â
USD will look to regroup during its bye week and will return to action April 26 at BYU.
