SAN DIEGO—San Diego fell in the series finale to Portland, 20-0, on Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park.
Â
The Toreros (25-15, 9-9 WCC) trailed 1-0 heading in to the fourth inning before the Pilots (21-19, 3-15 WCC) began to build their lead, scoring at least one run in the final six innings to prevent the series sweep.
Â
Anthony Donatella (2-1) got the start for USD, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up three runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.Â
Â
It was a tough day for the Torero bullpen, with six pitchers coming on in relief of Donatella, collectively giving up 17 runs on 15 hits and nine walks with five strikeouts.
Â
USD struggled to get things going offensively against Portland starter Chris Clements, who held the Toreros to one hit through eight innings of work.
Jeff Houghtby registered San Diego's only hit of the contest, a double to right-center field in the bottom of the second inning.
Â
Next up, the Toreros will host San Diego State and Hawaii for midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Saint Mary's for a weekend series Friday through Sunday.
