Strong Start to WCC Play

San Diego earns pair of victories against Pacific

SAN DIEGO – A walk-off grand slam by Sara Silveyra to secure an eight-run rule victory in the second game of a doubleheader just about summed up San Diego's afternoon against Pacific as the Toreros opened conference play with a pair of wins.

The Toreros (17-18, 2-0 WCC) were firing on all cylinders Saturday, consistently getting clutch hits, great pitching, solid defense and launching three home runs on the day. USD earned a 5-2 win in the first game and picked up a 12-3 victory in five innings in the second game.

Sara Silveyra had a monster day at the plate, going 5-for-7 (.714) with a grand slam, two doubles, four runs and four RBIs. It is the first grand slam of her career and she became the seventh Torero to hit a grand slam since 1997.

Madison Casiano also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-6 (.500) with a home run, a double and two runs.

Delaney Heller (9-7) got the start in the first game and threw her team-leading eighth complete game of the season. She held the Tigers (14-21, 0-2 WCC) to two runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

The Toreros struck early against Pacific in the first game, capitalizing on two errors in the bottom of the first to post five runs. That was all USD would need to secure the 5-2 win.

Madison Earnshaw got the start in the second game but was relieved by Halle Kyler (3-2) after 1 2/3 innings. Kyler was excellent in relief, holding the Tigers scoreless and only permitting two hits and one walk with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.

USD took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI double by Lindsay Clare. Pacific responded with three runs in the top of the second inning after loading the bases with no outs.

The Toreros rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third inning to retake the lead, 5-3. Casiano and Lauren Kane produced RBI-singles, and Kelli Kufta sent a sacrifice fly to right field.

USD put the finishing touches on the victory in the bottom of the fifth. Clare put the ball in play and a run scored on a fielder's choice. Casiano followed with a two-run homer to put USD up, 8-3.

The Toreros loaded the bases with two outs for Silveyra who launched a shot to centerfield that bounced off the top of the fence and landed behind it for a walk-off grand slam.

USD will look to keep its momentum going and secure the series sweep on Sunday at noon PT.
