Back-and-Forth Battle Comes Up Short

No. 21 San Diego dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 13 Washington

HONOLULU—Three Toreros reached double-digit kills but it was not enough to propel No. 21 San Diego over No. 13 Washington in a 3-1 loss on Saturday night at Stan Sheriff Center.

Thana Fayad racked up a team-high 17 kills, adding nine digs and two blocks for the Toreros (0-2). Freshman Grace Frohling was sensational in her debut for USD, hitting a match-high .500 on the night with 14 kills and one block. Roxie Wiblin matched Frohling with 14 kills of her own.

San Diego's defense kept pace with the high-powered Washington hitters, collecting eight team blocks, with Lauren Turner leading the charge with a team-high five blocks.

Laura Madill and Fayad led the team in the back court with nine digs a piece, while Wiblin and Annie Benbow each added eight digs.

Anna Newsome and Madill split court time directing the offense and racked up 28 and 20 assists respectively.

The Huskies (2-0) relied heavily on senior outside hitter Kara Bajema who tallied a match-high 23 kills, while Samantha Drechsel added 12 kills and Lauren Sanders registered a match-high six blocks.

UW got off to a hot start and led USD 14-8 midway through the first set. San Diego then went on a 9-3 run paced by two kills from both Fayad and Frohling to tie things up at 17-17. The Toreros held within one at 19-20, but the Huskies closed out strong to take the first set 25-20.

It was a different story in the second set as USD jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and never let up. The Toreros hit .545 as a team and won the second set 25-20 behind 10 kills from Fayad.

The third set saw a back-and-forth battle that had nine ties before the Huskies pulled away with back-to-back kills to make it 13-11. The Toreros pulled within one 19-20 on a Newsome ace, but UW rattled off five-straight points to go up 2-1 in the match.

The same back-and-forth battle carried into the fourth set where the teams were locked at 11-all midway through the frame. After a 4-1 run, it looked as if the Huskies would run away with the match, leading 21-17, but a handful of timely kills by the Toreros tied the set at 23-23.

The Toreros put up a valiant fight down the stretch, fighting off four match points before ultimately falling 29-27.

The Toreros will face St. John's in their final match of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. PT.
