Toreros Sweep Red Storm

San Diego got their first win of 2019 with a 3-0 decision over St. John’s

HONOLULU—Megan Jacobsen collected 12 kills and six blocks to lead No. 21 San Diego to a 3-0 sweep over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Stan Sheriff Center to conclude the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic.
 
The Toreros (1-2) were quick and efficient, taking consecutive sets 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 to earn their first win of 2019. USD held the Red Storm (0-3) to a .295 hitting percentage, with 10 team blocks.
 
Jacobsen hit a blazing .733 on the night, committing just one error. Thana Fayad notched her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs, adding three blocks and two aces.
 
Anna Newsome was efficient directing the offense to a .404 team hitting percentage and collecting 37 assists. 
 
Trailing 2-4 in the first set, the Toreros went on a 7-0 run including two aces from Fayad to take the lead and never looked back. USD hit .407 on their way to a quick 25-17 set one victory.
 
The teams traded points for the majority of the second set. With USD leading 20-16, St. John's went on a 7-1 to take the lead 23-21. 
 
But the Toreros wouldn't go quietly, rattling off the next four points. Fayad got a kill off the Red Storm block, followed by back-to-back Torero blocks. Grace Frohling secured the second set victory with her fifth kill of the frame.
 
It looked as if the Red Storm would run away with the third set, securing a 17-12 lead at the halfway point. But the Toreros rallied again, stringing together an 8-2 run down the stretch to secure the set and the match.
 
Jacobsen averaged 3.50 kills per set and hit .413 on the weekend to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The senior middle blocker collected a team-high 12 blocks (1.20 per set). 

San Diego will return to action for their home opening weekend, hosting Arkansas, Arizona, No. 2 Nebraska and West Virginia at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros will take on Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m. PT and No. 2 Nebraska on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.
