Toreros Travel for Thunderdome Classic

San Diego will travel to Santa Barbara for the UCSB Invitational

SAN DIEGO—San Diego will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. this weekend for the UCSB Thunderdome Classic.
 
The Toreros (2-3) will face host UC Santa Barbara (5-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. PT before taking on both Harvard (10 a.m.) and La Salle (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
 
USD's match against UCSB will be streamed via BigWest.tv and live statistics will be available at USDToreros.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• The Toreros went 1-1 on their home-opening weekend at the SDSU/USD Challenge, hosting Arkansas, No. 2 Nebraska, Arizona and West Virginia.
 
• USD got its second consecutive sweep on Friday night with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-19) victory over Arkansas. On Saturday, No. 25 San Diego took No. 2 Nebraska to five sets before eventually falling to the Cornhuskers 2-3 (25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 11-15). 
 
• The Toreros dominated the Razorbacks in straight sets behind 10 kills from Roxie Wiblin and nine kills apiece from Megan Jacobsen and Thana Fayad. The USD defense was stifling, limiting Arkansas to -.021 hitting on the night, collecting eight team blocks and holding a 50-31 dig advantage.
 
• Katie Lukes and Grace Frohling paced the Toreros against the Huskers with 17 kills apiece. The Toreros led 22-21 with a 2-1 set advantage in the fourth frame before Nebraska rattled off four straight points to prevent the upset and send the match to a deciding fifth set.
 
• The Toreros ran a 6-2 for both matches with Anna Newsome and Laura Madill splitting time directing the offense. Newsome collected 48 assists on the weekend, while Madill added 38.
 
• Thana Fayad paced San Diego in the back row collecting 30 digs (3.75 per set) and libero Annie Benbow added 23 (2.88 per set).
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST UC SANTA BARBARA
• The teams are knotted 12-12 in the all-time series, with the Toreros winning the last seven in a row. The last meeting came back in 2016, with USD finishing on top 3-0. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST HARVARD
• This is the first meeting between the Toreros and the Crimson.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST LA SALLE
• This is the first meeting between the Toreros and the Explorers. 
 
IN THE RANKINGS
• Despite an impressive showing against No. 2 Nebraska, the Toreros fell out of the rankings for the first time this season after being ranked 25th last week. However, USD continued to receive votes in the AVCA Division I Coaches Poll for week two, collecting 108 points.
