Saturday Sweeps

San Diego defeated Harvard and La Salle in straight sets as part of double-header Saturday

SANTA BARBARA—San Diego defeated both Harvard and La Salle in straight sets to conclude the UCSB Thunderdome Classic on Saturday in Santa Barbara, Calif. 
 
The Toreros (4-4) made quick work of the Crimson 25-14, 25-16, 25-15 before taking down the Explorers 25-13, 25-15 and 25-23 to finish the weekend 2-1.
 
In its first match of the day, USD hit .410 as a team while limiting the Crimson (2-3) to .151. The Toreros held the advantage from the service line with six aces (5 errors) to Harvard's one ace and five errors.
 
Katie Lukes paced the Toreros offensively against Harvard, collecting a match-high 16 kills and hitting a blazing .789. Lukes added three blocks while Lauren Turner led the team with four.
 
Roxie Wiblin also reached double-digit kills (12), adding three aces and six digs. Anna Newsome also tallied six digs and collected 36 assists directing the offense. 
 
It was more of the same in the second match for USD, with the Toreros winning the first two sets handily 25-13 and 25-15. The Explorers (4-5) made things interesting in the third set, fighting off two match points before USD eventually closed things out with a Wiblin kill to take the final set 25-23.
 
The Toreros outblocked La Salle 9.0 to 4.0 with Megan Jacobsen collecting five blocks in the contest. USD hit .376 compared to the Explorers .119. 
 
Newsome registered 27 assists, spreading the offense around evenly among the San Diego hitters. Jacobsen (.500) and Lukes (.563) led the Toreros with nine kills apiece, while Wiblin added eight. 
 
Hannah Patrick added six kills and Newsome and Turner each collected five.
 
Jacobsen and Newsome were selected to the All-Tournament Team after turning in strong performances in three matches. Jacobsen collected 30 kills (3.00/set) and nine blocks (0.90/set), adding two aces. Newsome tallied 95 assists (9.50/set), 23 digs (2.30/set), 10 kills and two aces.
 
The Toreros conclude their tough nonconference schedule next week, hosting their second invitational of the season. USD will face No. 20 USC on Thursday, crosstown rival San Diego State on Friday and wrap up with Long Beach State on Saturday. All matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
