LONG BEACH, Calif. – Milan Moses scored the sole goal for San Diego in a double overtime loss to Long Beach State, 2-1, on Monday night at George Allen Field.
The Toreros trailed 0-1 in the second half, but Moses connected off of an assist by
Sami Fairweather for the equalizer. Moses' goal proved to be the last in regulation for both teams.
USD's backline held strong in the first overtime period as the Beach were only able to get one shot off in 10 minutes of play.
The defense was impressive all night, blocking multiple shot attempts.
Kelley Carusa,
Michaela Foster, and
Sydney Hopkins patrolled the backfield for most of the match and had key defensive stops for the Toreros.
"I think all around the field everyone fought their hearts out," said head coach
Louise Lieberman. "From front to back, our girls did everything defensively to execute. I'm proud of their efforts."
Moses got another shot off in the 104th minute, but Long Beach State's Morgan Houston-Shepherd was able to make the save.
In the final minutes of overtime, Kayla Cannon capitalized in the 109th minute to score the game winning goal for the Beach.
Amber Michel saw all 108 minutes of action in the goal for San Diego and was able to bury seven saves on the night.
"I think a game like tonight really prepares us for another competition," said Lieberman. "I get really excited when we have these hard-fought competitions because it brings out parts of them that will be important moving forward."
San Diego will look to bounce back Friday when they face California on the road. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (PT).
"Recovery already started for Friday. We are ready to learn from this and let it help prepare us for the rest of the season," said Lieberman.
