SAN DIEGO—Katie Lukes and
Thana Fayad reached double-digit kills and San Diego defeated cross-town rival San Diego State 3-0 on Friday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (6-4) hit .323 in the match with seven aces and six team blocks, defeating the Aztecs (7-4) in straight sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-20 for their fifth sweep of the season.

Lukes collected a match-high 13 kills, hitting .357 on the night with one solo block. Fayad hit a blistering .529 with 10 kills, eight digs and one block. Frohling added eight kills for the Toreros, with four aces—all of which came in the first set.

The Toreros were strong on defense, limiting SDSU to a .124 hitting percentage.
Annie Benbow and
Payton Douglass tallied 10 digs and one ace apiece.
Megan Jacobsen paced the Toreros along the net, collecting three blocks while Frohling and
Hannah Patrick added two each.

USD ran a 6-2 offense with
Anna Newsome and
Laura Madill splitting setting duties. Newsome collected 22 assists, seven digs, one kill and one ace, while Madill added 16 assists and two digs.
The Aztecs were led by Hannah Turnlund and Victoria O'Sullivan who each collected eight kills in the match.

Tough serving by the Toreros kept SDSU out of system all night. San Diego collected seven aces, while the Aztecs committed eight serving errors without an ace.

In the opening set, USD put together an early five-point run that included three Frohling aces as well as a Frohling kill to make it 7-2, Toreros. Newsome added an ace to make it 12-6, Frohling got her fourth at 22-10 and the tandem of Lukes (4 kills) and Fayad (3 kills) at the net powered USD to a quick 25-13 first-set victory.Â

It was more of the same in the second set with Lukes and Frohling both collecting four kills. The Toreros combined for three of their six team blocks in the second frame and held SDSU to their lowest hitting percentage of the night (.067) to take set two, 25-15.

The teams traded points early in the third before San Diego pulled away at 14-10 after back-to-back hitting errors by the Aztecs. Lukes and Fayad continued a strong attack at the net, recording five kills apiece. At 17-24, SDSU fought off three match points before the Toreros eventually clinched the victory—appropriately on a Lukes kill.Â

The Toreros conclude the weekend invitational and wrap up their nonconference schedule against Long Beach State on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.
