Strong defense powered San Diego past Long Beach State 3-0

SAN DIEGO—San Diego hit .315 and collected a season-high 15.0 team blocks to defeat Long Beach State 3-0 on Saturday night in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (7-4) took down the Beach (3-9) in straight sets 25-8, 25-13, 25-23 for their second consecutive sweep of the weekend.

Grace Frohling hit .500 to pace USD offensively with nine kills, while Katie Lukes was second on the team, hitting .227 with seven kills and Thana Fayad added six.

San Diego dominated at the net, with three Toreros collecting five blocks each including Frohling, Lauren Turner and Megan Jacobsen. Fayad and Lukes both added three, while Cami May recorded two blocks and Hannah Patrick added one.

USD ran a 6-2 offense with Anna Newsome and Laura Madill again splitting setting duties. Newsome collected 17 assists, eight digs and two aces, while Madill chipped in 10 assists and four digs.

Fayad led the Toreros in the back court with nine digs and Annie Benbow and Payton Douglass added eight and seven digs respectively.

It was all Toreros in the first set, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. USD went on a nine-point run midway through the set including three consecutive Beach hitting errors to make it 18-4. LBSU struggled to get going offensively, committing 10 hitting errors in the first set compared the Toreros' three.

The teams traded points early in the second frame to make it 5-5 before USD went on a 4-1 put some distance between them and LBSU. The Toreros then registered four consecutive blocks to extend their lead 13-6 and never looked back. San Diego hit .565 without committing a single hitting error to taking the second set 25-13.

Long Beach State came out of the intermission with renewed energy, holding the early 5-3 lead. USD then put together a 7-1 run with kills from Lukes, Patrick, Jacobsen and Frohling to retake the lead 10-6.

However, the Beach wouldn't go quietly, tying the set again at 12-12. The teams traded points down the stretch, tying five more times. With the game knotted at 23-all, a Frohling kill gave the Toreros match point.

Fittingly, the final point ended with a block, as Turner and Patrick combined at the net to give the Toreros the 25-23 victory. With the win, San Diego finished a perfect 3-0 on its final weekend of nonconference play.

The Toreros will begin conference play on road next weekend traveling to Portland on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT and Gonzaga on Saturday at 12 p.m.
