SAN DIEGO – Bekah Valdez scored in the 85th minute to give the Toreros (3-2-0) a 1-0 victory against Cal Poly (1-4-1) on Sunday afternoon. The Dublin, Calif. native recorded her first collegiate goal and recorded 82 minutes of action.
"It's big time, so big time," said head coach
Louise Lieberman. "She's someone who decided to come in and make a statement. The last two games she's been phenomenal, and I'm so proud of her."
Valdez connected from 20 yards out off an assist from goalkeeper
Amber Michel as Michel punched the ball through on an advancing attempt by the Mustangs. The redshirt senior recorded her first career assist and point in 52 games played.
"She is just a force," said Lieberman. "Her attitude alone gives us so much strength, and then you add in her talent and she's solid."
Michel played a crucial role for San Diego on Sunday afternoon, recording three key saves for the Toreros and making multiple defensive stops on six corner kicks from Cal Poly.
The Toreros out-shot the Mustangs 19 to six with eight shots on goal. Valdez,
Jamie Goralski, and
Eden Quiroz recorded multiple shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net as Cal Poly's Sophia Brown recorded seven saves.
Milan Moses led San Diego with six shots on the afternoon. The midfielder was unable to connect as multiple attempts were successfully blocked by Cal Poly.
"I saw resilience from them and trying to stick to the game plan and trying to get good shots on goal," said Lieberman. "I'm proud of how we kept going."
San Diego will face cross-town rival San Diego State on Friday night at the SDSU Sports Deck. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (PT).
