SAN DIEGO - Junior Hannah Hudson notched a team-best fourth-place (29.07) finish in the 50-yard backstroke, but San Diego swimming and diving fell to SDSU 33-24 Thursday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex in a pentathlon. 

The meet, which was the first of the 2020-2021 season for USD, featured both scoring and non-scoring portions. The scoring portion featured 100 free, fly, back, breast, and IM, while the non-scoring portion consisted of 50 free, fly, back, breast, 400 IM, and 500 free. 

Despite the defeat in the pentathlon, the Toreros registered several top-10 finishes on the afternoon. Hudson, who also placed fifth (25.75) in the 50-yard freestyle and a sixth (1:02.75) in the 100-yard backstroke, was one of three Toreros to record multiple top-10 finishes. Sophomore Gracie Marshall finished sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.19)  and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.68), while fellow sophomore Mia Shaeffer placed sixth in both the 50 (28.43) and 100-yard fly (1:00.51).

Freshman Kali Villaluna rounded out San Diego's top-10 placements by finishing eighth in the 100-yard IM (1:04.30).

Freshman Josie Carlson and Shaeffer led the way for the Toreros in the pentathlon with identical combined times of 5:29.35, good for a two-way tie for 13th place out of 24 participants. 

The loss moves USD's record to 0-1 on the season so far, while SDSU moves to 2-0. San Diego returns to action on January 16 in Malibu, Calif. at the Pepperdine Invite.
