SAN DIEGO - San Diego women's basketball will open West Coast Conference play this week inside Jenny Craig Pavilion, playing host to Santa Clara on Monday before taking on San Francisco on Wednesday.
Â
This marks the first time since the 2016-17 season that the Toreros will open up conference action at home. Both games will be live streamed via the WCC Network. Tip off on Monday is set for 6 p.m., and the Toreros and the Dons will tipoff at 2 p.m. (PT) on Wednesday.
Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
• San Diego closed out nonconference play with a decisive victory against UC Irvine, 75-56.
Â
• Three players reached double figures, led by redshirt senior
Jordyn Edwards, who had 14 points and two steals.
Steph Gorman tacked on 12 points, while freshman
Laura Erikstrup helped out with 10 points and two steals from the bench.
Â
• San Diego took advantage of excellent ball movement in the contest, piling up 18 assists on 26 made field goals.
Sydney Hunter's three assists paced the Toreros.
Â
• San Diego's defense continued to work forcing 29 UC Irvine turnovers in the contest. The Toreros converted the opportunities into 25 points on the other end of the floor.
Â
• The Toreros jumped out to an 8-7 advantage early in the first, before going on an 11-0 run with four and a half minutes remaining in the quarter. The 21-10 lead after the first would be enough as San Diego never trailed from there on the way to victory.
Â
IN CONFERENCE OPENERS
• San Diego will look to snap a two-game losing streak in WCC openers as the Toreros are 2-3 over the past five seasons in conference openers.
Â
• This marks the first time since the 2016-17 season where USD will open conference play inside Jenny Craig Pavilion. In that season, San Diego opened WCC action with two back to back home games in a loss to San Francisco (67-82) and a win against St. Mary's (73-71).
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SANTA CLARA
• The Toreros hold advantage in the all-time series against the Broncos at 42-36. San Diego is on a one game losing streak after suffering a loss at Santa Clara on Feb. 22, 2020.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SAN FRANCISCO
• San Diego also holds the all-time series against the Dons at 42-32 and are on a three-game winning streak after sweeping USF during the 2019-20 regular season.
Â
THE ADDITION OF GORMAN
• Transfer guard Gorman made her debut inside the JCP after being made immediately eligible by the NCAA's blanket waiver.
Â
• In one game of action, the Wodonga, Australia native added shooting power to San Diego's rotation scoring 12 points in her debut and shooting 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. She adds to the San Diego's depth at the guard position in addition to returning starters Pace, Edwards and
Sydney Hunter.
Â
MYAH IS BACK
• Senior guard
Myah Pace returned to action in the Toreros final nonconference game of the year against UC Irvine. The Oakland, Calif. native scored eight points in 23 minutes of work with five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Â
• Pace is the reigning all-time single season steals record holder for USD and is ranked in the top 10 in the career category. She is also the sole All-WCC Preseason Team selection for the Toreros and helped elevate San Diego's offense last season averaging over 10 points per game.
Â
NATIONALLY RANKED
• Coming out of the nonconference slate, San Diego ranked second in the country in steals and turnovers forced. The Toreros have averaged 15.0 steals over five contests and are forcing double digit turnovers in every game so far this season.
Â
• San Diego also ranks in the top 25 nationally in steals and turnover margin.
Â
• This continues San Diego's national prowess on the defensive side of the ball, after the Toreros finished the 2019-20 campaign ranked in the top 25 in multiple defensive categories.
Â
• Edwards has been a force for the Toreros' defense and is among the best in the country ranking 22nd in steals per game (3.4) and 32nd in total steals (17).
Â
THE HUNT FOR THE WCC CROWN
• The Toreros will look to continue their dominance in the West Coast Conference after finishing the 2019-20 regular season ranked second in the WCC. San Diego earned the triple-bye to the WCC Tournament Semi-finals for the first time in program history to knock off Pepperdine.
Â
• San Diego then fell to Portland 64-63 in overtime in the WCC Championship and qualified for the 2020 WNIT prior to the season's cancellation in March. The postseason appearance would have marked the eighth under head coach
Cindy Fisher's tenure at USD.
