San Diego Takes on Fullerton on Tuesday

SAN DIEGO - San Diego women's basketball will travel to Cal State Fullerton for the first road game of the season on Tuesday. Tip off is set for 5 p.m. (PT).
 
Cal State Fullerton is coming off two losses to start the 2020-21 campaign as San Diego enters the matchup on a one-game losing streak.
 
The game will be broadcast on Big West tv and live statistics will be available.


LAST TIME OUT         
• San Diego fell in the season opener to San Diego State, 64-56. The Toreros got off to a slow shooting start in the first and couldn't make up ground despite outscoring the Aztecs in the three remaining quarters.
 
• Two Toreros finished with double digit performances in seniors Sydney Hunter and Jordyn Edwards. Hunter led the way off the glass for San Diego, collecting eight boards on the afternoon.
 
• Despite the loss, San Diego's defense was able to shut down the Aztecs perimeter shooting, holding SDSU to only 17.6 percent from beyond the arc.
 
• San Diego also cleaned up the defensive glass collecting 29 defensive rebounds and allowing only nine offensive rebounds for SDSU.
 
• The Toreros' displayed depth in their rotation on Saturday with 10 players seeing at least 10 minutes of action and 19 points coming from the bench.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST CAL STATE FULLERTON
• The Toreros enter the 2020 matchup against the Titans on a one-game losing streak, after suffering a 72-67 loss in 2019-20.
 
• In the past five matchups, San Diego is 4-1 vs. the Titans and have outscored Cal State Fullerton 336-264. In four of the five matchups, the Toreros have held Cal State Fullerton to under 55 points in each contest.
 
• This contest marks the 25th meeting between the Toreros and the Titans.
 
BIRD IS BACK
• Redshirt junior Kendall Bird returned to action, debuting in the starting lineup against the Aztecs, after suffering a season-ending injury in 2019-20.
 
• The forward played vital minutes for San Diego as she was 3-for-7 from the field and recorded seven points, one assist and four rebounds.
 
FRESH FACES
• The Toreros feature a talented freshmen duo once again this season in center Laura Erikstrup (6'2", Portland, Ore.) and guard Gabby Giuffre (5'11", Le Salva Beach, Calif.).
 
• Both Erikstrup and Giuffre saw time in San Diego's season opener, combining for 12 points. Erikstrup shot 50 percent from the field and recorded three rebounds to add to her efforts on Saturday.
 
• Junior transfer Steph Gorman also joins the experienced class of returners after spending her first two seasons at Utah State.
 
SEASONED SENIORS
• San Diego will rely on it's three returning starters in guards Myah Pace, Edwards and Hunter.
 
• Two of the three seniors were San Diego's top scorers in 2019-20 (Pace and Edwards) as Pace averaged 11.9 points per game last season.
 
• The trio also helps lead the defensive side of the ball with current reigning single-season steals record holder Pace recording 92 takeaways on the year, and Edwards and Hunter combining for 116 steals in 2019-20.
 
RECAPPING THE 2019-20 CAMPAIGN
• San Diego ended the 2019-20 campaign as the runner-up in the West Coast Conference Tournament, after a 64-63 overtime loss to Portland in the championship contest.
 
•  Prior to the cancellation of the postseason, the Toreros would have earned an automatic bid to the 2020 WNIT marking the eighth postseason bid under head coach Cindy Fisher.
 
•  The road to the WCC Championship was hallmarked by the Toreros earning the automatic bid into the semifinals via the triple-bye for the first time in program history. San Diego captured the spot after defeating Pepperdine at home, 62-58.
 
•  Four Toreros earned All-WCC nods in guards Pace and Edwards, along with graduating seniors Madison Pollock and Leticia Soares. Pace and Soares also earned All-Tournament team recognition for their performances in Las Vegas.
 
•  Fisher was also recognized, being named the WCC Coach of the Year for the third time in her tenure after generating an 11-game improvement from the 2018-19 campaign.
