Game-Winning Three from Martinsen Secures Sweep of Dons

Erica Martinsen's game-winner leads San Diego past San Francisco 61-58

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Erica Martinsen hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with only six seconds left in the game to put the Toreros (17-9, 11-4 WCC) ahead for good in a 61-58 victory against the Dons (9-18, 2-13 WCC) on the road on Thursday night.

The Toreros had three players score in double figures, led by senior Leticia Soares, who recorded 21 points for a new season-high, seven rebounds and two steals. Jordyn Edwards added 20 points, eight rebounds and five steals, and Sydney Hunter tacked on 12 points and two steals.

Soares pulled down seven offensive rebounds to pace San Diego's offense that racked up second chance opportunities, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.

San Diego forced 22 San Francisco turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Thursday's game. The Toreros turned those takeaways into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Edwards' five steals led the way for San Diego.

Edwards and Hunter got it going early scoring 13 of the Toreros 16 points in the first, as San Diego entered the second frame down 18-16.

Back-and-forth action continued between the Dons and the Toreros as San Diego rallied in the second to just outscore USF 13-10. The scoring advantage created a one-point edge at the half, 29-28. San Diego forced eight San Francisco turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.

San Diego's offense exploded early in the third quarter as a basket from Soares punctuated a 10-0 run with seven minutes to go in the period. The scoring run created the largest lead of the game for either side as the Toreros extended its advantage, 39-28.

Soares was dominant in the third, scoring 13 of her 21 points and shooting 71 percent from the field. The Dons worked to cut the lead, but San Diego still entered the fourth quarter with a 46-41 edge. San Diego played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 17 points in the paint.

San Francisco worked its way back to take a two-point lead with under three minutes remaining in the fourth off a three-pointer from Mikayla Williams. Edwards quickly responded with two back-to-back threes of her own to make it 58-56 USD with one and a half minutes to go.

The Dons evened the score at 58 apiece off a layup from Leilah Vigil. Martinsen then entered the game off a timeout from Cindy Fisher with 23 seconds to play. The redshirt sophomore drilled a deep three off an assist from Edwards to win it for San Diego

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, when they'll take Santa Clara in their final regular season road game at 2 p.m. (PT).
