SAN DIEGO—Freshman
Carter Rustad had everything working on Saturday, fanning eight Seattle hitters to help secure a 6-2 victory for USD.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Rustad (2-0) gave up one hit—a solo home run in the top of the fourth—and walked four in five innings of work for San Diego (5-1). Sophomore
Jake Miller also made an impact on the mound for the Toreros, throwing four innings, giving up one run on two hits, with two walks and striking out five Redhawks (2-4).
Offensively, the Toreros were led by
Adam Lopez and
Thomas Luevano, who both went 2-for-4 with a double. Lopez accounted for two of USD's runs on the night, while Luevano crossed once. Five players drove in a run for San Diego, and four came up with an extra base hit as the Toreros put together another 10-hit outing.
It is the third-straight game USD has collected 10 or more hits.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, putting up four runs in the third inning including a one-run single off the bat of sophomore
Caleb Ricketts.
Shane McGuire extended his six-game hit streak with an RBI single. The junior has driven in at least one run in each of USD's six games this season.
The Redhawks cut into San Diego's lead with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth, before the Toreros answered in the bottom of the fifth.
Lopez came across to score the lone run of the inning for San Diego, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the Toreros.
San Diego held Seattle U without a run before building their lead to 6-1 the following inning on an RBI double from
Cody Jefferis.
The Redhawks put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but San Diego still coasted to the 6-2 win behind the arm of Miller, who retired the final four batters in order.
The Toreros conclude the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament on Sunday when they take on Iowa at 2 p.m. PT at Fowler Park.
