Toreros Cruise Past Bakersfield in Season Opener

Heller's 8-strikeout performance leads San Diego past Cal State-Bakersfield

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Senior Delaney Heller had everything working on Friday, fanning eight Cal State-Bakersfield hitters over seven innings of work to help lead San Diego (1-0) over the Roadrunners (0-2), 6-0.

In addition to her eight strikeouts, Heller (1-0) tossed seven shutout innings while giving up five hits and walking none for San Diego.

"Delaney was very efficient," said head coach Jessica Pistole. "She only had 80 pitches on the afternoon, which is amazing. Her and Madison (Casiano) really worked well as the battery."

Sophomore Sophia Bjerk led the way offensively for the Toreros, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Rion Simms put together a standout day at the dish as well with a double and an RBI. Morgan Hill, Calif. native Lauren Hendrickson also contributed, going 1-for-2 for San Diego with a double and an RBI.

"It was a great team win," said Pistole. "I thought they did a really nice job creating team offense. It was not just one person. We had tons of heads up baserunning and an excellent approach at the plate."

The Toreros got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second as Bjerk came across to score on a throwing error off a hit from Halle Kyler.

San Diego then held the Roadrunners scoreless before adding to their lead in the fourth inning. Hendrickson connected for a two-out RBI double to push across one more run for the Toreros, 2-0.

The Toreros' defense continued to hold the Roadrunners scoreless before building their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning. Bjerk connected on a 2-2 count for her first home run of the season, scoring Savannah Shields.

Heller completed two back-to-back three up three down innings in the fourth and fifth, tallying two more strikeouts. The Toreros then picked up two runs in the top of the seventh, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Simms, bringing the score to 6-0 in favor of San Diego.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday, when they will take on Pittsburgh and Cal Poly at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (PT) in the Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament.
