SAN DIEGO - Behind two goals from freshman
Sara Evans and a big night from junior goalkeeper
Ellyn Casto, San Diego women's soccer (6-7, 1-3 WCC) defeated LMU (0-14, 0-4 WCC) on Friday night, 2-0.
The Toreros opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, as
Bella Piete played a ball ahead to Evans, who found the back of the net for the first time in her career. Evans scored once again 74 minutes into the contest.
Casto secured the first 90-minute shutout of her career, ending with four saves.
USD improves to 6-7 (1-3 WCC) on the season, and will travel to Portland next Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Piete sent a long ball to Delaney Jannone in the 6th minute to spring a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, but her shot went just wide left.
- Casto kept it scoreless in the 13th minute, coming up with a kick save on a shot from inside the box.
- USD took the lead in the 32nd minute, as Evans took a feed from Piete inside the box and finished inside the left post.
- Another diving save from Casto early in the second half maintained USD's 1-0 lead.
- Evans extended the lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute, evading multiple defenders and sending a left-footed shot to the upper left corner.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Casto now has 60 saves on the season and 123 in her career.
- Evans is now tied for second on the team with two goals on the year.
- Piete notched her second assist.
- Redshirt junior Michaela Foster has played every minute of all 13 games this season.
- Jannone and Aryssa Mahrt each tallied seven total shots. Mahrt led the team with four on goal.
