Mahrt Scores in Loss at Portland

Toreros drop 4-1 decision at Merlo Field on Wednesday night

PORTLAND, Ore. — Aryssa Mahrt scored her second goal of the season on Wednesday night but San Diego women's soccer (6-8, 1-4 WCC) dropped a 4-1 decision to Portland (6-7, 2-3 WCC), falling to the Pilots at Merlo Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Goalkeeper Ellyn Casto notched a pair of saves in the first half to keep Portland off the board and send the contest to halftime scoreless.
  • Thirteen minutes into the first half, Portland pulled ahead after an own goal from USD.
  • The Pilots doubled their lead three minutes later, making it a 2-0 game after Nedya Sawan scored at the 61:03 mark.
  • Mahrt, a sophomore midfielder/forward from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then found the back of the net in the 65th minute, zigging and zagging her way through multiple Pilots defenders before she scored to the upper left portion of the goal.
  • Portland answered with two more goals of its own in the 69th and 86th minutes courtesy of Taryn Ries and Sawan to secure the 4-1 victory.

The Toreros will remain on the road this weekend, traveling to to Spokane, Washington to take on Gonzaga this Saturday. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m. PST.
