Toreros earn 3-1 win at Santa Clara to move to 4-0 in WCC play

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Katie Lukes tallied 17 kills, Grace Frohling added 16 of her own, and No. 25 San Diego volleyball (10-3, 4-0 WCC) rolled to its fourth straight victory on Saturday afternoon, taking down West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara (4-11, 0-5 WCC) by a 3-1 margin at the Leavey Center.

The Toreros won the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-19 before dropping the third by a 25-19 margin, then finished things how they started, closing the match out with another 25-17 win in the fourth.

USD traded points with the Broncos early on in the first set before they tied the frame at 12 via a block from Grace Frohling and Leyla Blackwell. It then ripped off eight straight points, surging ahead to a 21-13 advantage after Katie Lukes and Blackwell punctuated the run with a combo block. Four points later it was Lukes who finished it, sealing the set win (25-17) with a kill.

The second set saw more of the same, with the Toreros and the Broncos knotted at 11 after Frohling notched her fifth kill of the day as an equalizer. Elly Schraeder got in on the action to give USD a two-point advantage and the Toreros never looked back, securing the second set (25-19) as Frohling and Blackwell added to their kills totals.

After the Broncos took the third set by a 25-19 margin, USD took charge in the fourth, pulling ahead by a score of 12-11 as they closed out the match, never trailing down the stretch enroute to the 25-17 set victory, and the 3-1 win in the match.

Lukes led the way for USD with 17 kills and seven digs, closely followed by Grace Frohling with 16 kills and eight digs of her own. Leyla Blackwell totalled seven kills, Emily Wilson had six, and Laura Madill and Elly Schraeder each had one.

Defensively, Blackwell paced the Toreros with nine blocks, complemented by a six-block performance from Frohling and four from Lukes.

Libero Annie Benbow had 18 digs, and setter Laura Madill racked up 45 assists.

The Toreros are back in action on Thursday, October 7 when they return to home to continue WCC play and take on Gonzaga in the JCP. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
