SANTA CLARA, CA – Despite two goals from sophomore forward
Nicklas Clausen, San Diego men's soccer (1-12, 0-3 WCC) fell at Santa Clara (8-1-3, 2-0-1 WCC) on Saturday night, 3-2.
After the Broncos took a 3-0 lead in the 30
th minute, USD stormed back to cut the deficit to one. Clausen scored in the 35
th minute on a corner kick from
Mason Tunbridge, then finished a long ball from
Rhys Gourdie in the 52
nd minute.
Santa Clara was able to hang on over the last 38 minutes to earn the victory.
USD falls to 1-12 (0-3 WCC) on the season, and will return home to face LMU on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara got on the board in the sixth minute, playing a through ball behind the defense and beating the goalkeeper.
- The Broncos made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, capitalizing on a corner kick with two headers.
- In the 30th minute, Santa Clara sent a corner kick to the far post. After multiple headers, the Broncos tapped in a rebound to make it 3-0.
- San Diego answered five minutes later, as Clausen headed home a corner kick from Tunbridge.
- Gourdie played a long ball down the right side to Clausen in the 52nd minute, who snuck the ball inside the near post to cut the deficit to 3-2.
