No. 20 Volleyball Sweeps Santa Clara

SAN DIEGO – Led by a game-high 15 kills from senior Katie Lukes, No. 20 San Diego volleyball (15-4, 9-1 WCC) swept Santa Clara (8-13, 4-7 WCC) on Thursday, 3-0.
 
The Toreros dominated the first set, 25-13, before earning a 25-20 win in set two and a comeback win in the third, 25-23.
 
San Diego improves to 6-0 at home this season, and will look to remain undefeated at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday against San Francisco.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Set - (USD, 25-13)
  • A Katie Lukes kill forced Santa Clara to call a timeout, and Lukes came out of the break with another kill to put USD up 8-3.
  • Santa Clara battled back to cut the deficit to 9-7, but USD took eight of the next 11 points including two aces from Camryn Tastad.
  • San Diego doubled up SCU at 22-11 after five straight points. The Toreros sealed the set with a block from Leyla Blackwell.
 
Second Set - (USD, 25-20)
  • After the teams traded points to make it 4-4, USD took control with five straight including two Frohling kills.
  • The Toreros jumped ahead to a 14-6 lead as Tastad secured another ace.
  • Santa Clara brought the deficit to just three at 22-19, but a kill from Lukes and a Bronco error sprung USD to the match point. Tercariol ended it with a battle at the net.
 
Third Set - (USD, 25-23)
  • Santa Clara took the first point, but USD answered with the next four on Tastad serves.
  • Frohling and Blackwell notched two kills each as the teams swapped points to get from 12-12 to 16-16.
  • SCU later took a 22-19 lead, but back-to-back Lukes kills, two Santa Clara errors, and a Blackwell block put USD back in front, 24-22.
  • Lukes sealed the win with a powerful kill on an assist from Tercariol.
 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • USD held a 6-0 advantage in blocks, including two each from Blackwell, Emily Wilson, and Gabby Goddard.
  • Tercariol ended with 27 assists.
  • Annie Benbow registered 11 digs, followed by Tercariol with 10.
  • The Toreros are 97-19 in WCC play dating back to 2015.
