SAN DIEGO — Four Toreros competed in the Hagedorn Invitational this weekend at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center, with redshirt sophomore
Sacchitt Sharrma leading the way after going 3-0 in singles and doubles play.
"A great weekend of competition for our four guys," San Diego assistant coach
Sebastian Rey said after the tournament had concluded. "We were able to get good quality matches and see the areas needed for improvement. Across the weekend we played well, a few nerves here and there as it was our first matches of the year for some players, but we stayed true to our identities and played better and better as the weekend progressed."
A tandem of Sharrma and sophomore
Blake Kasday began the action on Friday by beating Kennesaw State's pair of Matthew Terry and Sergio Ingles by an 8-4 margin.
On Saturday, Sharrma and Kasday won again, this time taking down UC Irvine's Thomas Smart and Matthew Sah 8-4. USD's
Alex Stater and
Nikhil Niranjan also got in on the action in doubles, defeating the Anteaters' Mike Mkrtchian 8-3.
Sharrma's success continued to singles play on Saturday, with the New Delhi, India native prevailing by scores of 6-2 6-0 against KSU's Raul Garcia.
On Sunday, Kasday and Sharrma beat Denver's Mattia Ros and Nicolas Herrero Cuesto 6-0, then Sharrma finished the weekend on a high note with a 6-7(4) 6-2 6-2 defeat of UCI's Mkrtchian.
"Big congrats to
Sacchitt Sharrma who went 3-0 in singles and doubles play, really pleased with his performances after not playing a match since last March," Rey added. "Great to have him back on the match court. Thanks to Denver, UCI and Kennesaw State for making it a successful tournament."
