SAN DIEGO - Led by three first-half goals, #6 Pepperdine (11-1, 2-0 WCC) defeated San Diego women's soccer (5-6, 0-2 WCC) on Wednesday night, 4-0.
The Waves took control early, posting goals in the 26th, 29th, and 45th minutes to take a 3-0 advantage into the break. The road team sealed the win with a tally in the 70th minute following a corner kick.
USD drops to 5-6 (0-2 WCC) on the season, and will travel to BYU this Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sydney Hopkins launched a shot from 30 yards out in the 15th minute, but the Pepperdine keeper punched it over the net for a corner kick.
- The Waves struck first in the 26th minute on a fast break, making a move to the left around the goalkeeper at the 18 and finding the back of the net.
- Pepperdine added to its lead in the 29th minute, dribbling up the left side and sending a low cross across the box for a tap-in.
- In the 36th minute, Ellyn Casto came up with a big one-on-one stop after a Pepperdine forward broke free.
- Just before halftime, the Waves extended their lead to 3-0 after a corner kick scramble.
- Pepperdine sent a long cross to the far post in the 70th minute, where a volley made it 4-0.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Casto ended with four saves, and is up to 45 on the season (4.5 per game).
- Hopkins and Eden Quiroz led USD with two shots each.
- Michaela Foster has yet to come off the field this season, recording 1,005 minutes played in 11 matches.
- Each team earned five corner kicks.
