Frohling Pushes No. 20 USD Past Pilots

Toreros take down Portland in straight sets at the Chiles Center for third straight sweep

PORTLAND, Ore. — Junior Grace Frohling racked up a match-high 19 kills, redshirt sophomore Isadora Terçariol added 33 assists plus 12 digs, and No. 20 San Diego volleyball (17-4, 11-1 WCC) raced to its third straight sweep on Thursday night, taking down Portland (5-17, 2-11 WCC) in straight sets at the Chiles Center as it continued West Coast Conference play.

USD beat the Pilots 25-18 in the first set, then prevailed by scores of 25-21 and 25-14 to close out the match and earn a 3-0 win.

Terçariol and Frohling's performances were complemented by nine kills from senior Katie Lukes and four blocks from senior Gabby Goddard. Frohling and Lukes each had three service aces, Frohling, Lukes, and freshman Emily Wilson all had five digs, and Frohling, Terçariol, and freshman Haylee Stoner all notched at least two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - (San Diego, 25-18)
  • The Toreros traded points with the Pilots in the set's early stages before a pair of service aces from Frohling made it 7-4 USD.
  • A great dig by senior Annie Benbow followed by a powerful kill from Wilson expanded the USD lead to a 14-8 margin.
  • Lukes capped a lengthy rally with a booming kill to make it 17-11 in favor of the visiting team.
  • A kill from Stoner and a pair of errors from Portland earned USD a 25-16 win in set one, pulling them ahead 1-0 in the match.
Second Set - (San Diego, 25-21)
  • The Toreros again engaged in a back-and-forth battle to begin the set, trading points with the Pilots all the way up to a 10-10 tie.
  • A kill from Frohling pulled USD ahead by a point, then a block from Stoner and Lukes made it a two-point San Diego advantage.
  • Portland again tied it at 12 before Frohling again pushed the Toreros ahead, doubling down a point later with another kill to make it 14-12 San Diego.
  • Freshman Leyla Blackwell evened the score at 17 after USD fell behind by a point before Terçariol brought back the San Diego lead by a 21-20 margin a few points later.
  • Two kills from Frohling and one from Lukes secured the second set for the Toreros by a score of 25-21.
Third Set - (San Diego, 25-14)
  • After chasing early on in the set, Frohling evened the score at six with a kill.
  • Another kill and an ace from Frohling made it a three-point lead, which Lukes maintained with a kill of her own to make it 10-7.
  • Lukes then added a pair of service aces of her own, bringing the San Diego advantage to 12-7.
  • A pair of freshmen helped expand the lead, with Anna Jaworowski notching a service ace to make it 15-10, then Wilson hammering a kill to make it 18-10.
  • Two blocks from Goddard and two kills from Frohling pushed USD to the win, taking down Portland 25-14 in the set and 3-0 in the match.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Benbow and senior Camryn Tasted combined for 11 digs.
  • Terçariol was a perfect 3-3, hitting 1.000 for the match.
  • Frohling now leads the Toreros with 285 total kills and 27 total service aces so far in 2021.
  • The win marks USD's 10th sweep of the season, and its ninth out of 12 WCC matches.

The Toreros will remain on the road next time out on Saturday, traveling to Spokane, Washington to take on Gonzaga. First serve at the Martin Centre is set for 12 pm PST.
