SAN DIEGO - San Diego baseball released its full 2021 schedule today, as announced by head coach
Rich Hill. The Toreros' schedule features 47Â games, including 20 non-conference matchups against nine of California's most competitive college programs, as well as a 27-game West Coast Conference slate versus the league's 10 teams. USD will open the season with 15 non-conference games, including play in the Tony Gwynn Classic tournament.
San Diego's first game of 2021 is on Friday, February 19 at 6 p.m. at crosstown rival San Diego State, the first of three meetings between the programs this season. The series will continue with another matchup at Tony Gwynn Stadium the next day before the two teams return to Fowler Park for an afternoon game — USD's home opener — on the 21st to conclude the series.
The Toreros' first road swing of the season comes on February 23, when the team travels to Riverside, California to take on California Baptist.
Play in the Tony Gwynn Classic tournament kicks off on February 26 when USD takes on Cal State Fullerton in a three-game weekend series at Fowler Park.
Next up for the Toreros will be four games against UC San Diego. San Diego will travel to Triton Ballpark for the first game of the series, then return home for two games at Fowler Park against the Tritons, then finish the series on the road in La Jolla.
On March 12, the Toreros will take on another UC school, UC Riverside, at Fowler Park. USD's matchups against the Highlanders will consist of a Friday afternoon game, a doubleheader that Saturday, and a series finale on Sunday.
Conference play for USD begins on Friday, March 19 with the first of three games against Saint Mary's on the road. The Toreros will also travel for conference series at Santa Clara and Gonzaga, and will host Pacific, Pepperdine, LMU, San Francisco, BYU, and Portland.
Five non-conference matchups are interspersed in the Toreros' schedule during WCC play: a home-and-home series games against USC (March 23 in Los Angeles, April 6 in San Diego), and Tuesday evening matchups at Fowler Park versus Vanguard (NAIA), Concordia University Irvine (Division II), and San Diego Christian (NAIA). San Diego's final scheduled game of the regular season is on May 23 at Fowler Park versus Portland.
The Toreros return nearly all of their position players and pitching staff from 2020, and add a talented class of freshmen and transfers to their 2021 lineup, including three All-WCC Preseason Team selections. San Diego was 12-4 when the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
