SAN DIEGO - San Diego women's basketball will enter another three-game week with a trip to Malibu, Calif. to take on Pepperdine on Monday at 2 p.m. (PT).
Â
The contest concludes a four-game road stretch for the Toreros who will return to Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday.
Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
• The Toreros went on a five-game winning streak after a 83-27 victory over St. Mary's in Moraga. San Diego's performance against the Gaels marked the most points scored against a WCC opponent since the 2015-16 campaign.
Â
• Redshirt senior
Jordyn Edwards led San Diego's offensive onslaught, one point shy of her career-high 21 points with six assists and two steals.
Sydney Hunter posted a new season-high 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while
Myah Pace also added a double-digit performance with 15 points and two steals.
Â
• The Toreros never trailed in the contest, going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Hunter, to expand its lead further to 51-34 with six and a half to go in the third. San Diego then fired away from deep in the fourth quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points to secure the 82-73 win.
Â
• San Diego's winning streak was snapped in a battle in Stockton, as the Tigers beat the Toreros 66-61. The Toreros had two players score in double figures, led by Pace who recorded a new season-high 20 points and five steals. Edwards tacked on 10 points and five steals in the contest.
Â
• The third quarter saw back and forth action between both teams with three lead changes and two ties. Pacific secured a one point advantage after the quarter and San Diego could not pull any closer in the contest.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PEPPERDINE
• The Toreros are currently on a three-game winning streak against the Waves, as Pepperdine leads the all-time series 38-46.
Â
• This marks the second regular-season contest between both programs as San Diego will look to sweep Pepperdine for the 2020-21 campaign.
Â
THE PROWESS OF PACE AND EDWARDS
• Seniors Pace and Edwards have led San Diego's offense this season, as Pace emerged this past week as an elite scoring threat for USD. Edwards continues to lead all scorers averaging 11.1 points per game. Pace sits right behind her fellow senior averaging 11.0 points per game in 10 games of action.
Â
• Over the past week, Pace strung together three consecutive double-digit performances reaching a new season-high 20 points against Pacific. The Oakland, Calif. native has reached double figures in six out of 10 games of action this season.
Â
• Edwards and Pace also rank in the top two for assists as Edwards has been key in San Diego's rotation, generating 3.9 assists per game. She has helped the Toreros find incredible ball movement as San Diego is averaging more assists per game than its opponents.
Â
• Edwards continues to lead San Diego on the defensive side of the ball as well collecting 47 takeaways on the year and ranks 10th in the nation in steals per game.
Â
STEAL CITY IN THE RANKINGS
• San Diego's defense continues to be a powerhouse in NCAA Division I.
Â
• San Diego is currently third in turnovers forced, second in steals per game and sixth in turnover margin. The Toreros have rarely dipped below the top 10 in any of these categories throughout the 2020-21 campaign.
Â
• Edwards is also among the country's elite defenders, ranking 10th in steals per game and 17th in total steals on the season.
Â
INSIDE THE STANDINGS
• San Diego has risen to third in the WCC standings behind nationally-ranked Gonzaga and BYU. The Toreros are only two wins behind the Cougars in the current conference standings.
Â
• Second place in the WCC would secure a triple-bye in the conference tournament which leads directly to the semifinals, a path the Toreros took last season to appear in the 2020 WCC Championship.
Â
THE HUNT FOR THE WCC CROWN
• The Toreros will look to continue their dominance in the West Coast Conference after finishing the 2019-20 regular season ranked second in the WCC. San Diego earned the triple-bye to the WCC Tournament Semi-finals for the first time in program history to knock off Pepperdine.
Â
• San Diego then fell to Portland 64-63 in overtime in the WCC Championship and qualified for the 2020 WNIT prior to the season's cancellation in March. The postseason appearance would have marked the eighth under head coach
Cindy Fisher's tenure at USD.
