SANTA CLARA, Calif.—No. 18 San Diego got its fifth straight win to start the season with a 3-1 victory over Santa Clara on Tuesday afternoon in the Leavey Center.

The Toreros (5-0, 5-0 WCC) were paced by the one-two punch of
Roxie Wiblin and
Grace Frohling, taking down the Broncos (0-1, 0-1 WCC), 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-15. Wiblin led the team with 14 kills, hitting .345 and adding nine digs, while Frohling notched her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs.

USD collected 10 team blocks, led by
Lauren Turner with six and
Elly Schraeder with four. The Toreros tallied 43 digs, including a match-high 13 from
Camryn Tastad and USD's defense held the Broncos to a .116 hitting percentage.

Laura Madill had the offense hitting at a .239 clip, collecting 32 assists in the contest. San Diego collected eight aces from the service line, including a career-high four for
Thana Fayad.

The Toreros jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but the Broncos answered with a run of their own to tie things early 6-6. USD used a 10-3 run behind a dominant block and kills from Frohling and Turner to take a commanding 16-9 lead. San Diego held Santa Clara to a -.067 hitting percentage and took the first set 25-16.

The Broncos answered in the second frame, jumping out to a 10-6 lead early that included a five-point run for the Broncos. USD began to rally, sparked by three kills from Wiblin to make it 12-14. The teams battled back and forth before San Diego was able to pull within one point, 19-20. The Broncos closed on a 5-1 run to take the second set, 25-20 and even the match 1-1.

It was all San Diego to begin the third set, as the Toreros took an early 9-4 lead. Timely kills from Fayad and Wiblin helped extend USD's lead to seven before SCU rallied to make it 22-18. The Broncos held off two set points before a tip over the block by Wiblin sealed the third-set victory for USD, 25-21.

USD picked up right where they left off in the final frame, jumping out to a seven-point lead after three consecutive kills by Wiblin and a block from Turner and Wiblin to make it 10-3. SCU pulled within three points but that's as close as the Broncos could come. San Diego closed out the match with a 6-1 to take the final frame, 25-15 and the set, 3-1.

The Toreros remain in Santa Clara for the second match of the series with the Broncos on Wednesday at 2 p.m. PT. USD will then have a quick turn-around, traveling to Gonzaga for a pair of matches with the Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.
