SANTA CLARA, Calif.—No. 18 San Diego had three players record double-doubles in a 3-1 victory over Santa Clara on Wednesday afternoon in the Leavey Center.
Â
The Toreros (6-0, 6-0 WCC) were led by
Thana Fayad,
Roxie Wiblin and
Grace Frohling who all reached double-digit kills and digs in the four-set battle with the Broncos (0-2, 0-2 WCC).
Â
Fayad and Wiblin led the offense with 16 kills each, adding 17 and 13 digs respectively for the senior outside hitters. Frohling added 14 kills, 13 digs and a team-best three aces on the day.
Â
Defensively, the Toreros had a slow day at the net, collecting only three team blocks—all by the combination of Frohling and
Lauren Turner. USD was solid in the back court, finishing the day with 65 digs led by Fayad's 17.
Camryn Tastad also chipped in 11 digs and
Alex Hoglund and
Laura Madill each collected five.
Â
The freshman Hoglund saw her first significant time in the setting role for USD, collecting 22 assists. Madill added 21 assists on the day and the two directed the offense to a .261 hitting percentage.
Â
The Toreros got off to a hot start in the contest, quickly jumping out to a 14-7 lead behind the balanced attack of Fayad, Frohling and Wiblin. The Broncos rallied to pull within three but could not come any closer and USD closed out the first frame on a 6-1 run to take the set, 25-17.
Â
The second set started very similarly with USD, taking an early 7-3 lead. But SCU put together a run of its own to pull even at 9-9. The teams battled back-and-forth before a five-point run put the Broncos on top for good, 22-15 and SCU eventually took set two, 25-17.
Â
The third frame was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Toreros out of sync to start. USD fell behind quickly, 6-0 after three-straight blocks by the Broncos. The Toreros did not give up easily however, answering with a 7-3 run powered by four kills and an ace from Fayad to pull San Diego within one point.
Â
Santa Clara extended its lead again to 15-11, but the Toreros countered with another run, this time 9-1, to overtake the Broncos 20-16. SCU pulled back within one but the Toreros held on for a 25-23 third-set victory and 2-1 match-lead.
Â
The teams kept it tight again to start the final frame, battling to a 11-11 tie. USD then put together a six-point run with Tastad at the service line to take a 17-11 lead and the Toreros never looked back, taking the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
Â
San Diego will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Spokane to face Gonzaga for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
