Toreros Take Down Lions in WCC Opener

Goals from two freshmen push San Diego to victory

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - San Diego women's soccer (1-2, 1-0 WCC) defeated LMU (1-1-1, 1-1 WCC) 2-0 in a West Coast Conference match on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif.

Freshmen Katie Baxter and Aryssa Mahrt were the goal scorers for the Toreros.

The Toreros started off strong with a right-footed shot from senior Katie Lapomarda in the third minute that was kept out of the net by the LMU keeper.

It was Baxter that broke through in the 29th minute, resulting from the ball bouncing around the penalty area following a corner. The goal marks the first of Baxter's collegiate career.

The Toreros showed toughness on defense in the first half, allowing only two shots on target and just six total. Sophomore goalkeeper Ellyn Casto had a stop right on the goal line in the 40th minute to preserve the shutout.

The Toreros continued to showcase strong defense in the second half as the Lions managed five more shots with none on target.

Jamie Goralski, Baxter and Mahrt continued to look dangerous on the wings in the second half, making forward runs constantly. Their pace finally paid off in the 83rd minute when a high, arcing cross from Goralski was headed in by Mahrt to give the Toreros some insurance. It was Mahrt's first goal as a Torero as well.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Toreros against LMU and pushes their all-time record to 23-3-1.

The Toreros return home next week to face off against Gonzaga at 1 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, March 6 in Torero Stadium.
