Toreros Pick Up First Win in Conference Opener

San Diego defeats Pacific behind Churness brace

Stockton, Calif - San Diego men's soccer (1-1-0, 1-0-0) got their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Pacific (0-4-0, 0-1-0) on the road on Sunday afternoon.

After having the majority of the possession in the first half, the Toreros fell behind when a penalty was called against San Diego in the 45th minute. Goalkeeper Matt Wiher guessed the right way but was beaten by Pacific's Emory Rapaport to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros equalized when Alex Churness scored on a beautiful free kick cross from Ross Johnstone in the 57th minute.

In the 67th minute, the partnership of Churness and Johnstone struck again when Johnstone played a beautiful long ball to Churness who volleyed it home to put the Toreros on top 2-1.

Pacific's best chance to tie the match came in the 84th minute but Wiher made a clutch save to preserve the lead.

San Diego outshot Pacific nine to five and five to two when it came to shots on goal.

The Toreros will be back in action on Sunday, March 7 as they welcome Saint Mary's to Torero Stadium. The match is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m. (PT).
