Thana Fayad all reaching double-digit kills. Madill registered 36 assists in the contest and added 11 digs for her first double-double.
Â
Wiblin led the offense with 15 kills and added 13 digs, and hit at a .375 clip. Frohling finished with 12 kills and 11 digs, while Fayad chipped in 11 kills and was one dig shy of a double-double herself, adding 9 digs in the back court.
Â
Defensively, the Toreros were dominant in the back court, collecting 62 digs as a team, led by
Camryn Tastad with a career-high 15 digs. Tastad also led the team with two of the team's four aces. Elly Schrader led USD at the net, collecting four blocks while Frohling, Turner and Madill all finished with two.
Â
San Diego was slow to start the match, falling behind early, 9-2. The Toreros rallied including a 12-2 run sparked by tough serving from Tastad to take a 17-16 lead. The teams traded the lead to a 23-23 tie, before back-to-back kills from Wiblin gave USD the set, 25-23. Wiblin collected eight of her 15 kills in the set.
Â
The second set remained tight all the way up to a 17-17 tie before USD rattled off a 6-1 run to create some distance. SMC collected three-straight points but a service error and a kill from Frohling closed out the second frame, 25-1.
Â
The Toreros were firing on all cylinders in the final frame, hitting .400 as a team led by Fayad (6 kills) and Wiblin (5 kills). USD held a 15-10 advantage halfway through the third set before the Gaels put together a 7-1 run to take the lead. The Toreros answered with a run of their own sparked by three kills from Wiblin to lead 22-18 and eventually cruise to a 25-22 victory to take the match.
Â
Next up, the Toreros will remain home to host Portland in a pair of matches on Wednesday and Thursday, both scheduled for 4 p.m. PT in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
